5 Signs Your 'Simple' Chip Needs Immediate Replacement

Not all glass damage is created equal. While we pride ourselves on our repair capabilities, there are specific signs that indicate a windshield's structural integrity has been compromised beyond the point of repair.

1. The "Dollar Bill" Rule

If a crack is longer than a dollar bill (about 6 inches), it's generally too long to be safely repaired. At this length, the glass's ability to withstand a secondary impact or properly support the deployment of an airbag is significantly reduced.

2. Location, Location, Location

Damage that reaches the edge of the glass is critical. The edges are the weakest points of the windshield's structural bond. Even a small chip near the black ceramic 'frit' (the edge) can compromise the entire seal.

3. The Driver's Critical View

We never recommend repairing damage that sits directly in the driver's primary line of sight. Even the best repairs leave a slight cosmetic blemish, which can cause dangerous glare or distraction during night driving or in heavy rain.

4. Depth of the Damage

A modern windshield is a 'sandwich' of two layers of glass with a plastic interlayer. If the damage has penetrated both layers of glass, it is irreparable.

5. The Age of the Damage

The longer you wait, the more dirt, moisture, and road chemicals get trapped inside the crack. Once contaminated, the resin may not bond correctly, making a replacement the only safe option.
